Stay Safe on the Lake

I don’t like hearing about tragedies around the water. Sometimes it really is an accident that can happen in a split second. Other times it really is common sense that is lacking.

The Huntersville Herald called to ask for some advice on safety around and on the lake this summer. Timely, given there had been at least 3 people lose their lives in the last few weeks. The link to the full article is here, but these are the main items I thought needed pointing out.

  • Safety First – wear a life jacket always. If something should happen at least you will float.
  • Learn To Swim – help yourself in the water by being confident of your swimming abilities.
  • Know Your Water – be sure to know the depth, temperature and quality of where you are swimming.
  • Know Your Exits – before you get in, know how you can get out.
  • Check The Weather – storms, winds and choppy conditions can arise quickly making the water a lot harder to move in.
  • Don’t Drink Alcohol – cloudy judgments and poor coordination do not mix well with swimming.

Enjoy the water this summer, but always be respectful of its strength.
